Ivan Ivanov and Jeline Vandromme were in the US Open Junior Singles Championships spotlight. Ivanov, the 16-year-old from Bulgaria, and Vandromme, who is a year older and from Belgium, were straight-sets successful.
Ivanov won the Boys’ title at The Championships. In New York, he defeated countryman Alexander Vasilev, 7-5, 6-3.

Vandroome, whose match was watched by three-time US Open Women’s Singles winner and Belgian tennis legend, Kim Clijsters, downed another 17-year old, Swedish qualifier Lea Nilsson 7-6, 6-2.
The Boys’ final was a Bulgarian double… It was the first time two contestants from their country played for a major junior title and the first time since Grigor Dimitrov won the juniors in 2008, also in New York, that a Bulgarian took home a Slam trophy.

Vandroome, a former pianist at the Conservatory of Bruges, was musical explaining to itftennis, “You have to be disciplined in both things, and you have to practice a lot, every day. I don’t know for sure that piano helps tennis, but I love playing both.”
With her victory, she became the first Belgian since Kirsten Flipkens in 2003 to earn the US Girls’ championship. She wasn’t as fortunate in the Girls’ Doubles final. Teaming with Laima Vladson, a 17-year-old from Lithuania, she lost 6-2, 6-2 to Alena and Jana Kovackova, the 17 and 15 year-old sister duo from the Czech Republic. In the final, the No. 3 seeds were better than the No. 4 seeds.

This was the “Year of the Sister Slams” as the Californian twins Annika and Kristina Penickova, who will turn 16 on September 11th, were the Australian Open Junior Girls’ champions, and the Kovackovas concluded the 2025 Junior Sister Slam season.
The Boy’s Doubles featured four players from the US. Keaton Hance and Jack Kennedy, both 17, escaped with a 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 victory over Noah Johnson, a recent University of Georgia enrollee who will be 18 in November, and Benjamin Willwerth, who after reaching the Australian Open Junior Boys’ title round, “uncommitted” from Arizona State University. and turned 18 on July 4th. Here the No. 6 seeds were better than No. 7.

Juniors were in the New York spotlight… and it is important to remember when it comes to future success that Taylor Fritz, the 2015 US Open Boy’s champion, went on to become the 2024 US Open Men’s finalist and going into this year’s tournament was No. 4 in the world.
